I only have one bloom that's worthy of showing off on this last Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day of 2008. Without further ado, check out my amaryllis 'Sweet Lillian':
Now, regular readers of this blog might be saying, "Hmm. I thought that Kim didn't much care for pink?" And if you're thinking that, you are indeed correct! However, I bought this amaryllis bulb in November and potted it up for my grandmother... who likes "pretties" and who never lets me pay her for things like sewing alterations and door-draft stoppers. (You might remember my clandestine bulb-planting thank you to her from last fall.)
Unfortunately, I ran out the door in a hurry on Thanksgiving morning with a long drive ahead of me, having spent at least an hour or so longer in bed than I'd wanted. And of course, I forgot miss Lillian in my haste. So she's blooming away in my picture window.
A few other things are blooming today as well: the very pretty 'Ice Punch' poinsettia, abutilon megapotanicum, my Thanksgiving cactus (seen here) and an unknown variety of rosemary. Not a huge list... but not a bad list for December in Ohio!

Oh, she would have been so happy to have such a lovely amaryllis.
Ouch... twist that knife a little bit more, won't you, Chuck?! lol.
Yeah, this pinkness is wasted on me, but she would have thought it was fabulous. Oh, but I did get her one of those huge-flowering hibiscus as a makeup. (Fine, it was free. And it has to live the winter in a pot before she can have it. But whatever.)
I'll have to be a better granddaughter next year. That might be a good New Year's Resolution!
Oh dear Kim!
Hey... but it is especially pretty in pink is it not ;-) Mm... I dont suppose you'll want to see the pink heuchera in my GBBD posting then :-D
Wishing yuo a wonderful time over the holiday period and Happy Gardening in 2009 :-D
looks great, thanks for sharing this with us.
Miss Lillian is a powerful pin this time of year. Gorgeous.
LOL, it happens to the best of us, forgetting to bring a lovely present with us. But never mind, now you can enjoy the beautiful blooms and perhaps learn to appreciate what a wonderful colour pink really is. ;-)
Happy GBBD, Kim!
I am not much of a pink girl either, but I think I could be swayed to change my mind with that Amaryllis. I used to grow Apple Blossom and that was a very sweet one as well. Frankly, I've hardly ever met an Amaryllis I didn't like!
'Sweet Lillian' makes a delightful house guest, dear Kim, and quite lovely (you might change your mind about pink!) Happy Holidays!
That's a great list for Cleveland in December, Kim! Maybe you could send your grandmother a photo?
The question on all our minds..."Will Sweet Lillian make you a pink convert?" If it works I have some PPPP for you this spring! She is indeed a pretty flower!
Gail
I'm now officially kicking myself for not getting an Amaryllis. You may not like the color of yours, but you have to admit that the flower form is much better than those overblown blousy ones that are so common. I wonder if it's too late to start one now?
Sweet Lillian is indeed a sweetie pie! Wouldn't mind having that one in my house...
Katarina
Shirl, lol, didn't you see the name of that pretty little heuchera of yours? She's a 'Georgia Peach,' not a 'Georgia Pink!' *grin*
ck, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. :)
Greenbow Lisa, my former husband's grandmother is named Lillian, so it makes me think of her whenever I see these flowers. Of course, if it had been named after her, it would have been 'Feisty Lillian' instead of 'Sweet Lillian!' (I miss her!)
Yolanda Elizabet, hmmm... I don't know if a new appreciation of pink is among the miracles to be anticipated during this season! lol.
Ms. Wis, I did like Apple Blossom, too! And there was a deep red, yet elegantly formed amaryllis that had me salivating... but it was way out of my price range, unfortunately. And I definitely wanted to buy one for her, not me.
Joey, thank you. Happy Holidays to you, too!
Leslie, I'll just have to remember to actually bring it with me next time... although it would make a nice photo for a Christmas Card, wouldn't it? I mean, if I framed it right, etc...
Gail, you can put that question to rest--and don't worry, your PPPP is still safe from me! LOL.
Mr. McGregor's Daughter, I definitely agree with you on the flower form! I do like the funky flowers of the cybisters, but the doubles just don't do anything for me, nor do the ones with the crazy ruffled petals, etc.
I would think that you could start one now. The last time I was at my local garden center, they had some that were just starting to sprout...
Katarina, she is very sweet, isn't she? :)
That is a beauty. I am a bit surprised that you have this pink given your preferences but you have to admit it is a pretty pink. Besides, it makes you think of Grandma! Love the gingerbread house post. Did anyone eat them?
Nice Bloom Day! I'd say that if you have to have a pink flower, then Miss Lillian is the way to go!
I'm digging your wintery header too, BTW! *~<]:-)
Sweet Lillian is a beautiful flower, especially for a pink flower. What would you have posted for blooms without her?
Thanks for joining in for bloom day again!

One of my students suggested we grow some neon pink flowers next year. what I put up with is amazing. Another one gave me an amaryllis bulb as a Christmas present. I put up with so much, I do. ;')
Hi Kim, I am just getting around to visiting more GBBD posts. You have some nice photos, and of course blooms, for Dec. in Ohio! I love the shade of your amaryliss and I'm certain your grandmother would too...although I'm sure she is enjoying her flowering hibiscus, that you mentioned, above. Have a Merry Christmas! Jan
Kim, that's an awesome bloom. Add me to the list of people who don't care much for pink blooms. Oddly enough for someone who dislikes them as much as I do I have a few that managed to get into the garden.
When it's December being picky about flower colors seems less important than seeing any flowers, doesn't it, Kim? I got an amaryllis at the Divas of the Dirt party - but label says Red Dragon so I won't have any conflicts!

It's a beautiful bloom, Kim--and given how much you like plant combining, surely there are some combinations that pinks help along a bit? or maybe not . . .
Miss Lillian has lots of lovely blooms. Grandma would've adored her. I'm sure you must be able to appreciate her gorgeous star-shaped blooms when not much else is blooming, even if she is pink...which I think is especially pretty!
Wow, Kim. That 'Ice Punch' poinsettia is really different! I like it! Mine is dropping leaves now. :-( The cold from the ice storm might have something to do with it, but maybe not. This is what they always seem to do for me.
