One Man's Trash...

... will soon be my new potting bench! Check out this week's fun find. You can tell how wide it is by comparing it to the garage door in the background.

Had I not been able to borrow a van to load it into and get it to my house, I would have at least found a way to get those lovely turned legs and the old (iron?) pulls. I did chip the veneer as you can see, but the large chip came off cleanly so I'm liking my chances of reattaching it.

This piece used to be an old stereo cabinet, judging by the hole in the top for a record player, electric cord coming out of the back, and speaker hidden in the cabinet on the left. Both cabinets and the drawer offer storage, and all I have to do is line the space in the top before I fill it with soil. I'm so excited!

It will look great.I'm using an old coffee table as a planting display on top, and storage beneath.I want to go shopping on wednesday for garden things bought from charity shops.Reusing stuff that has been thrown out, like big planters etc.Cant wait to see it in situ!!

What a lucky find! It will look fabulous and how wise you are to have spotted it's potential.

Ooh... Snappy, that sounds cool. Can we see a picture of that when it's finished? Might give me an excuse to pick up the next coffee table that I see, too. :)

Thanks, Kati! Actually, I did really get lucky in that the guy whose van I borrowed is rarely at my workplace. He just happened to be there that very day and have the time to allow me to borrow it. Whew!

This is going to a very classy potting bench. I hope you'll post a picture when you get it set up.

I love it! Just out of college, my husband got an old buffet at an auction and planned to do the stereo thing. Never did it and it's been in our various dining rooms ever since. If he had, I'd probably now be using it as a potting bench too. I'm always on the look out for alternative uses for great items too.

PG, it's funny that you say that... when I first saw this piece, I thought, "Oooh, I can use that in my dining room as a buffet!" Once I found the large hole in the top, though, I changed my mind. lol.

Clare, I definitely will post pictures when it's "done," but that's probably a fall project for me.
