Fungus Friday

Alright, I admit it... blog memes like Green Thumb Sunday and Thursday Thirteen really do exist, but there is no such thing as Fungus Friday. I just made it up, purely so I could post a picture of this cool tree fungus that we found on Christmas Eve. :)

Oo oo, cool. That tree looks alive but it must be dead for the fungus to grow so vigorously. Some one gave us some chicken of the woods fungus to eat, which also grows on dead trees and is probably a relative of the one in your photo. It was quite a large fungus at least a foot or more across and several layers deep. We fried (umm, sauted I guess that's a more sophisticated term now) it in butter added some black peppers and a pinch of salt and yuck it didn't taste very good! It's supposed to be a highly rated edible fungi by fungophiles but not for me.

Happy new year. Keep up the good work.

Ki, you are way more gastronomically adventurous than I! *grin* I had to google "chicken of the woods fungus" and found some interesting pictures of it. One article says that the younger fungi and the outer edges only of older fungi taste the best, by the way, so maybe you should give it another shot?!

Fungus Friday, what will you think of next? I've already seen one other post for this... you might just have started something!

Hey I'm digging your "Fungus Friday" big time! I consider myself a friend of fungus anyway, so happy FF!!! :)

Sissy, I didn't realize that anyone else would have a cool fungus picture to share! Yours is much better camouflaged than mine--do you know what kind it is? I tried to post a comment on your blog to ask, but it wouldn't let me. :(

Carol, I wasn't really trying to start a meme... lol. I just thought it would be a fun post.

Lisa, I don't know if you qualify as a FoF... I've seen your posts about growing mushrooms just to eat them! Some friend of fungus you are. ;) teehee.

Uhh, no thanks don't want to eat it again. The fungus was very beautiful and we did eat only the tender parts but the taste was a little off putting. Some people seem to like it tho.

Okay, maybe I'm not a fungus's best friend, but I am a fan of fungus! (Of "fungus fiend" ;)
